This quote appeared in my Facebook feed from The Sanctuary’s Facebook page last week.
I’m sure for many of us, some weeks it feels like we’re always looking at a list of things that need to be done. Either for our jobs or businesses, or our family, or ourselves. We get taken over by the mechanics of making everything tick that we can overlook the great things around us, the small successes we have every day that we don’t seem to have time to stop and notice.
In business, it’s easy to get caught up in feeling so busy, tied, pulled in all directions, always switched on, a fear of missing the next big thing, constantly having to be better. We all want to do our very best, to make our businesses meaningful and enjoyable, to provide a first class service in what ever we’re doing. But what about the memories?
I decided to set up my own business to enjoy my time more. To find more purpose in what I would be doing. To work in a way that I loved, doing something that made a difference. I never expected this to be easy (rose tinted in the beginning may be, but never easy!).
I met with a friend a few months ago, and as we were talking about life in general I heard myself saying, “I have been in my spare room for 4 years!”. Where has that time gone? What have I done?
OK so not really in there every minute of every day for four years, but that is where I run my business from, it’s the HQ, and that’s where the magic happens. But was what that magic? What had I been doing?
I thought about all the things that I had done in those four years for the business (not all of them were in my spare room), and what working for myself has allowed me to do for me and my family. It has made a big difference to my life and those around me. As well as the business achievements, I have been able to spend more time with the people that mean a lot to me, and I can sneak in a cheeky lunch or shopping trip when I’d like to as well!
I thought about all the people I have met through my business that I have formed brilliant relationships with, not just on a work level either.
The last few months have been extremely full on for me. I’m involved in some exciting projects and businesses, and I have also been working on new plans for my own business too. It’s easy to forget how far we have come when we’re so focussed.
If you take one thing from this post, take some time to stop and think about how much you have achieved in your life and your business. it’s very humbling and very motivating.
You can even make a list if you want! Maybe memories can be found in lists….
