You read that right! This blog post is about being unorganised. You’re probably wondering why, when I help people be more productive and organised, I am writing about the opposite.
Search the Internet for blog posts about organisation and you’ll find several to keep you busy for a few hours. They’re all saying the same thing; make a list, don’t multi-task, use your time wisely, do the thing that you don’t want to do first every day, and much more. Doing all of that can all work wonders.
But what if you have tried them all and nothing fits? You still feel unorganised, worried you’re going to miss something crucial, and have so much whizzing around in your mind that you’re feeling overwhelmed already. Add to that the fact you have tried this organisational wizardry that the posts talk about and are still in the same place. Is there something wrong with you?
Flip your idea that you are unorganised and take a different approach
Think of it as ‘freestyle’.
Working with lots of different businesses and the people that make them happen has taught me that one method of organisation doesn’t fit everyone or every business. The overwhelm caused by tying to fit the way you work and your business into a process that doesn’t suit you can be an awful feeling and not what we’re aiming for.
Whether you have a combination of a list, post-it notes, or you use online platforms like Trello, Asana, or a mixture of both, if it works for you and you’re on top of what you need to get done, then go for it.
Organisation is a lot about mindset as it is about whether you have a to-do list or not.
Take note, just relabelling your unorganised business as something else, won’t make you organised, it will simply put a sticking plaster over what you need to face up to, and that won’t stick for long.
Tricks of the trade
Here are five top tips (aka warning signs) of unorganisation!
- You keep most of what you have to do in your head.
- If it’s not in your head, scraps of paper and your favourite notebooks have been your salvation, but you have so many things jotted down in different places that you don’t know where everything is.
- You’re in reactive mode, fire fighting rather than planning your time and working efficiently. If you don’t answer that email straight away you might forget.
- You’re easily distracted, you have been at it all day but feel like you haven’t achieved anything.
- You’re grumpy, you’re not at the top of your game and it just feels like too much like hard work to try and keep so many plates spinning.
